  1. Seek immediate medical treatment and ask for a copy of that medical record.
  2. Take notice of anyone that might have seen the maritime accident and write down their names, addresses and telephone numbers. These may be valuable
    witnesses later.
  3. Take note of the time, area, and anything around you that could have caused your injury.
  4. If you are physically incapacitated, find another ship employee or seamen from the security or administration department and report the injury.
  5. If your maritime employer does not offer to provide you with a form for a written
    incident report, request one. Fill this form out to describe the incident. Even if the details are damaging toward the company…include them!
  6. Make a copy of the written injury report and store in a safe place.
  7. File the report with your immediate supervisor and administration.
  8. Take photographs and video of where your injury occurred and anything that
    contributed to the accident.
  9. Do not sign anything other than your written incident report. Any other paperwork should be delayed until you are able to speak with a lawyer.
