Lives Affected 10 Rules Resources & Links
  1. Go to the cruise ship’s doctor to get treatment for your injury and get a copy of that medical record.
  2. Contact the FBI from the ship if your injury involves a crime, such as an assault.
  3. Take, or have someone take, multiple photographs and video of the scene of the incident before it changes, if possible. If the scene has changed, still take photographs and videos. Photograph any warning signs (e.g. “wet floor” signs, “watch your step signs,” etc.). Also take multiple photographs of your injuries.
  4. Write down the name, address, and telephone number of each person (crew and passengers) who is a witness to the incident.
  5. Immediately report in writing the incident to the security/safety department on the cruise ship.
  6. Get a copy of your written report and make sure it is accurate.
  7. If necessary, go to a shore side doctor at the next port of call.
  8. See your doctor when you get back home and get a copy of that medical record.
  9. Contact an experienced maritime attorney to discuss the cruise ship incident, and your injuries, as soon as possible.
  10. If you do not seek an attorney’s advice within six months of your injury, make sure you send by certified mail a letter to the cruise ship putting them on notice of your injury, even if the ship is aware of your injury. Include in your letter the name of the ship where you were injured, the date of your injury, where on the ship you were injured and very briefly describe the incident. You do not need to go into all the details. The notice should be received by the cruise line within six months of your injury. Make sure you keep a copy of your letter.
